THE ENTRANCE AND FRONT DOOR:  Seasons of the Church Year - PRE-LENT

Across the top, is the Cross Patee and the depiction of the season of Pre-Lent.  This season of the church year is that time following Epiphany and before Ash Wednesday, the beginning of the 40 day Lenten period. Pictured in these windows are the water turned into wine at a wedding in Cana, where Jesus shows the first signs of his supernatural power. In the top center area is the Chi Rho or XP which comes from the first two ancient Greek letters used to spell the name of Jesus – XPICTOC. The XP is one of the most widely used sacred monograms for the Savior, Jesus Christ.

Moving along is the season of Lent and Holy Week depicted with the Passion Cross or The Cross of Suffering. This particular cross is distinguished from others by the sharp pointed ends of the arms indicating the cruelty and suffering Christ endured on behalf of humanity. Also shown is the Crowing Rooster which suggests the trial and condemnation of Christ (I Peter 3:15). The traditional color of Lent and Holy Week is purple.
